Margie Aleen Everts (sister of Karen Everts Goad) married William Charles Vander Veen in 1956. They had 2 sons. Steven was born in 1970, and Laurance was born in 1972. Steven was labeled as "mentally retarded".
When Steven the older son with disabilities, was 19 years old, he died in a house fire in which his mother was also severely burned, it was 1989. She was in the bathroom and he was in the bedroom, and a fire broke out in the living room. Margie tried to save her son but he had been traumatized by fire when he was 3 years old, and he fought her off when she was trying to get him out of the house.

Her other son Laurance, shot his wife in 1995. He fled the scene and then shot himself in the head while he was driving. He died shortly after the "murder - suicide" incident, in 1995, he was 22 years old. The damage from the self inflicted gunshot wound was extensive, The medical examiner said it was basically a frontal lobotomy. W.V. FIRE VICTIM SERIOUS BUT STABLE
WOMAN WAS IN BATHROOM, SON IN BEDROOM WHEN BLAZE STARTED

A West Valley woman was in serious but stable condition Monday after a weekend house fire that claimed the life of her son.

Margie Vanderveen, 50, 3143 S. 4060 West, was being treated at the University Hospital Burn Center for second-degree burns, mostly on her face and hands, and smoke inhalation, a hospital spokeswoman said. Her son, Steven Vanderveen, 19, who was mentally retarded, died in the fire that engulfed the family's two-story, split entry frame structure about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, said West Valley Fire Marshal John Blundell.

Blundell said Monday that an investigation shows Vanderveen was in a bathroom and her son was in a bedroom when the fire broke out in a corner of the living room.

"We have narrowed the point of origin of the fire to a corner of the living room where a small TV was setting on top of a stereo cabinet. Until we can have this stuff analyzed at a lab, we can't tell whether the TV caused the fire. We don't know if the TV was on at the time of the fire," Blundell said.

The fire marshal said the handicapped youth was severely burned at the age of 3 in another fire and was very scared of fire, resisting efforts by his mother to get him from the house Saturday night.

When Vanderveen's efforts failed, she ran from the house to get help. By that time neighbors realized there was a fire in the home and were trying to enter the home. Two neighbors, Robbie and Steve Ruttenbur, tried to fight the fire with garden hoses and sprayed Gramm McDonald, another neighbor, with a hose so he could enter the home through a basement window. But he was driven back by smoke and heat, Blundell said.

He said firefighters were hampered in their efforts to fight by the blaze by a water main break.

"But we still had enough water coming through (the line). In addition, we had three pumper trucks, all of which carry additional water, on the scene," Blundell said.

When three units from the fire department arrived on the scene, the home was fully engulfed in fire. Flames were coming out all the upstairs windows, Blundell said. Four firefighters suffered minor injuries in the blaze.

VICTIM’S FATHER SAYS SHE DIDN’T FEEL AT RISK

The father of a woman fatally shot Monday during a fight with her estranged husband said he can't understand the circumstances of his daughter's violent death.

Larey Belka said he's shocked by the tragic events that took place Monday evening at the West Valley home he shared with his daughter. Amy D. Vanderveen, 21, died about 7 p.m. Monday at LDS Hospital after suffering a single gunshot wound to the right side of her head, West Valley police Capt. Steve Shreeve said. The fatal bullet was fired from a 9mm handgun.

Vanderveen and her estranged husband, Laurance Vanderveen, 22, Kearns, were apparently speaking together inside the West Valley house, 2515 W. 3077 South, when shots rang out, Shreeve said. A 17-year-old baby sitter witnessed the shooting, although there were no children in the home at the time.

Laurance Vanderveen fled the scene and was located about 45 minutes later when police investigated a one-car accident at the intersection of 2100 South and 7200 West. The officers discovered Vanderveen had apparently shot himself in the head while driving, Shreeve said. The Kearns man was in critical but stable condition Tuesday at University Hospital.

On Tuesday, Belka and the woman's extended family faced the daunting tasks of organizing her funeral and determining the future care of her children. Belka spoke of his daughter as an avid rollerskater with a fun-loving spirit.

"She loved going to places like Lagoon or 49th Street Galleria," he said.

The children, ages 3 and 4, stayed at their great-grandmother's house Tuesday, with several family members having offered to assume their care, Belka said.

"They don't know she's dead, as far as I know," he initially said. Later, he said he believed one of the children had possibly been told.

Police are familiar with the Vanderveens' ongoing domestic disputes and, prior to Amy Vanderveen's death, had taken a report on a domestic-related threat made against the woman.

However, Belka said he doubted his daughter realized the degree of danger.

"She didn't think he'd kill her. As far as I know, she didn't," he said.

OFFICIALS SAY MURDER SUSPECT MAY NEVER BE COMPETENT

Laurance Vanderveen, who shot himself in the head following the shooting death of his estranged wife, may never be competent enough to be charged, officials said.

Police said Vanderveen, 23, borrowed his father's gun on Aug. 8 and drove to his father-in-law's West Valley house where his wife, Amy, 20, and their two children had been living. The couple argued and authorities say Vanderveen shot his wife in the head in front of a 15-year-old baby sitter.

Vanderveen then fled in his car and shot himself while driving.

Vanderveen had been charged in July with assaulting his wife after police responded to a domestic incident at their home.

West Valley police have not yet presented evidence to prosecutors so charges can be filed in the shooting.

"I'm in no hurry since he's not going anywhere," said detective Tracy Cowley.

Vanderveen was released from the hospital and taken to a rehabilitation center last week. On Wednesday, however, he was readmitted to University Hospital with a high fever caused by a brain infection, his father, William Vanderveen, said and hospital officials confirmed.

The senior Vanderveen said doctors have told him the effects of his son's injuries are comparable to that of a frontal lobotomy.

"Part of his brain is basically gone," he said. "They say he will likely spend the rest of his life in and out of consciousness. At this point, there's still a possibility he might die."

Doctors treating Vanderveen declined to comment.

Prosecutors are taking a wait-and-see approach to the case, said Bud Ellett, chief deputy assistant district attorney for Salt Lake County.

If Vanderveen's physical condition improves but he remains mentally unfit for trial, prosecutors likely will consider taking steps to have him committed to a mental institution, Ellett said.

"We'll do something so that if he can't stand trial, he's not walking the streets," the prosecutor said.

The fate of the couple's two children also remains up in the air, said the victim's father, Larey Belka. Both the victim's brother and mother have filed for custody.

Since I compiled that time line above, I've found, and fitted in, more puzzle pieces. The timeline was compiled from an interview with Donald's sister Mary (don't even get me started!) and facebook posts from His niece Trish Nelson. and her Mother, the accuser/ alleged plaintiff in her prosecution of Donald Wells who is now in his 50's for something he did when he was a child. I don't really go into this subject much because I believe it is irrelevant to the problem of Summer being gone. I just want to note that Donald had a really messed up childhood, that doesn't make him guilty of hurting his daughter.
